So often, I get emails from members and students alike asking questions not just regarding clarification of rules but style of play.
Many times people who learn Mah Jongg together, begin to play outside of class together. Of course, we all learn at a different pace. Sometimes, we even remember rules differently.
What is the correct rule? Are we playing National Mah Jongg League rules? Is this a table rule?
Are we playing like we are still learning how to play Mah Jongg or we playing for “real”? These are the questions that need to be asked and answered by those you play with. Hopefully, your Mah Jongg goals are the same or at least similar.
To avoid hurt feelings and controversy, may I suggest, ask these questions when you get together
in the beginning not a year later. But most importantly, treat everyone equally. Rules cannot be determined on a case by case manner. When a situation arises(and you are not sure what to do), it never ends well when three gang up on one saying “your dead”. Most rule controversies, I have been questioned on, can be answered easily be reviewing one of our videos on your topic. Take your knowledge and share it. Better yet, if your friends need reinforcement, suggest they join Mahjonggmentor, then come together and discuss a video you have watched. This will certainly eliminate any rule discrepancies and you can enjoy the game of Mah Jongg and play stress free!
