My Mah Jongg Adventure

Day 7

(Please note Leah is currently at sea but is sending her blogs in order to share the experience. – frs)

It was another beautiful day in Charleston.  I tried to make the most of it.

I took a run along the coast, the wall that surrounds the historic district.  It was a great route, there are several parks, you’re along the water and you can see many of the historic homes.  In the afternoon, I relaxed by the pool.  I ...

(Please note Leah is currently at sea but is sending her blogs in order to share the experience. – frs)

As we are in port, there are no Mah Jongg Classes, or classes of any sort.

Charleston is charming, wonderful restaurants, and  it abounds with history.

Of course there is shopping too; whether you go to The MarketPlace or the Fashion District there is plenty to tempt you.  I try to stay focused on the Maj and try not to turn my ...

tiles4Today was our first day of two sessions. I had initially thought there would be no distractions.  There are actually many.

The World provides lectures and activities of interest.  Also, I believe many residents conduct business while on board.   Tomorrow we dock in Charleston, South Carolina, so today there were lectures about ...

Day 2

mjtilesToday we had our first class.  In attendance we had seven students.  I know it doesn’t sound like much, but there are only about 120 guests on the ship currently.  We have 6 beginners and one intermediate player.  My understanding is that several players already knowing how to play ...

Let’s Talk Defense

(This article also appeared in our August Monthly Newsletter along with the monthly Classroom Corner)

onesThis month’s Classroom Corner looks not at what to do next because you exposed some tiles, but what do you do when someone at the table exposes 4 of the same tile – in this case four 1’s.  In other words, playing with the thought of defense.  Too often we ...

The other night one of our players started to giggle and blush as she picked up her tiles and placed them on her rack. Our fifth sat beside her shaking her head.  we all assumed she had a bounty of Jokers in her hand. Two of us of course had not a single one… it had been that kind of ...

Finding my mah jongg set

mah jongg set

I learned how to play Mah Jongg about 5 years ago by taking Leah’s course at the adult community center, Mainline School Night. I decided to buy a Mah Jongg set so I could play with the women I met in the class. Even though both my grandmothers played Mah Jongg, somehow their Mah Jongg sets got lost among all the ...
