I have fond memories of playing games with family and friends throughout my life. During elementary school, I played a lot of card and board games with my dad. Mostly poker, blackjack and scrabble at night. At overnight camp, I would look forward to rain once in awhile, so we could have “Bunko” and stay inside our cabin to play games. My favorite game was Monopoly and I would play for hours.
In college and early working years, I played mainly backgammon and Trivia Pursuit. My husband was on the Jeopardy TV show, so I enjoyed playing as a team and winning a lot.
When I had my sons,I tried to instill the joy of games to them. I would bring a deck of cards out to restaurants to keep them patiently waiting for their food. I also played lots of board games with my sons throughout the years starting with the preschool games like Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders to the middle school games like Battleship and Stratego. And when we lost our electricity, we would play the Texas Holdem card game by candlelight.
Now as an empty nester, I am back playing games again. My primary game is Mah Jongg. I play Mah Jongg because it gives me the opportunity to use my mind and meet new people. I have made a lot of new friends from playing Mah Jongg. And I met my MahJonggMentor partners at a Mah Jongg “meetup” game.
I have also come full circle and now play CandyLand and Chutes & Ladders with my grandson who is 4, who I am trying to instill the joy of games.Share
