A Calculated Risk

Posted by:

One of the first defensive maneuvers Mah Jongg players learn is to avoid throwing a winning tile at all costs. I found myself in a situation while playing Mah Jongg last week that could serve as a perfect example of why sometimes we need to break the rules.

The player across from me (I’ll call her Kate) at the table had three exposures. Only a pung of 9 Bams was needed to win. I picked a 9 Bam and placed it ...

Substituting in Mah Jongg Games

Posted by:

tiles3

I’ve been part of a regular Mah Jongg game for a few months, and played with another group for a couple of years before that. With players missing the regular games due to vacations and family illnesses, I’ve been recently substituting for regulars in a few different games. I have therefore played not only with different players, and different personalities, but with different Mah Jongg sets and different house rules.

Most people ...

Benefits of Playing Mah Jongg

Posted by:

tournamenttipimageA recent article from Mahjong King (a key manufacturer of Automatic Mah Jongg tables) listed five main benefits of playing Mah Jongg. According to the author:

Mah Jongg can treat or slow the effects of dementia. In order to be successful, players need to stay mentally sharp throughout the duration of the game, trying to interpret clues from other players while constructing a winning hand.

Mah Jongg can help improve a person’s ...

Now that the 2015 NMJL card is nearing the end of its life, it’s time to make some resolutions for the new card. In the world of Mah Jongg, we are actually approaching the beginning of a new year. So it’s time to reflect on what we have all accomplished this past year and make some resolutions for the 2016 year.

I’ve talked to many players who have a weekly ...

Intentionally Giving a Winning Mah Jongg Tile

Posted by:

At a recent Mah Jongg game I played simply for fun, a veteran player who is at an advanced level discarded a tile she was certain another player needed for Mah Jongg. I was shocked when she offered the coveted tile for Mah Jongg. As expected, the other player called for the tile and won the game. Another player at the table asked the veteran player if she would have discarded the tile if we had been playing ...

The Good and Bad of Wall Games

Posted by:

Often when I have played a game of Mah Jongg and I think I have played well, and perhaps had some luck, that last tile just doesn’t materialize, and I’m disappointed that I didn’t win. Perhaps another player was also “on call” and won the game. Maybe another player who had no exposures suddenly called “Mah Jongg”. Sometimes the game is a draw, a “Wall Game”.

As disappointed tiles2as I may be with ...

Love It and Hate It

Decisions

I love playing Mah Jongg, but there are some situations during the game that I don’t love. Sometimes I even hate them. Here is a list of things that occasionally happen during the game that leave me shaking my head and muttering to myself.

  • Not being able to call for a discard due to being one tile short for an ...

For the Love of the Game

Posted by:

The options for Mah Jongg lovers of the game were limited not so long ago.  We could purchase Mah Jongg sets and books from catalogs or specialty stores. Then came the Internet boon, and more websites from which to purchase Mah Jongg sets and books. Table covers, bags, and shirts followed.

Recently the list of Mah Jongg-related merchandise seems limitless. Almost anything is available with an image of Mah Jongg tiles or with Mah Jongg phrases. Novelty soaps, dishes, license plates, ...
